I grew up using SOS pads on my grandmother's cast iron skillet and it never rusted once. (And I never got in trouble for the help I rendered, but that's the Grandma part of the story, not the cast iron part.) Anyway, cast iron doesn't rust, even if you wash it with soap and water and let it air dry. This rusted when I initially washed it. I tempered it. I oiled it before I used it. I left the cornbread in it over night, like my grandmother would have done. It rusted on the bottom.
