I originally purchased a Lodge 8-Inch skillet for use when camping, but I quickly discovered why so many cooks prefer cast iron cookware (almost all cast iron cook pieces are rated at 5 stars). It is very durable, conducts heat better, and with proper care it will develop a natural non-stick coating that will last for generations. Perhaps more subjectively, I think that meats tend to taste better when cooked in it.

Now, I have abandoned my collection of cheap aluminum non-stick cookery and most of my meals are prepared in this skillet. From chicken fajitas to stir fry, the skillet is what I use most, followed closely by the microwave.

Cleaning is simple: I scrub with hot water, place it back on the eye to boil off the water, then wipe it down with oil. I find that I am conscious enough to do it right after cooking, whereas a pot would end up sitting in the sink waiting to be cleaned. As a result, it seems as if cooking with cast iron is faster and easier.

Now, I almost exclusively use the skillet for cooking. It took a couple of attempts before I got it seasoned correctly, but the skillet is now darkening nicely.

The 8-inch skillet is perfect for me, not too large, nor too small. It is big enough to fry up several pieces of chicken, or large enough to make French toast.

Note: Lodge makes two different lines of cast iron cookware. If you don't want to have to season it yourself, I would recommend you buy the Logic brand of Lodge cookware. They are pre-seasoned and ready to use and well worth a few extra bucks.

I have owned an 8-inch Lodge cast iron skillet for years and it is my favorite size skillet for a variety of uses. I often saute onions and green peppers in it, as well as cook my scrambled eggs in it each morning. It's a great size for cooking a hambuger or grilled cheese sandwich. It's perfect for frying up one or two pieces of chicken if you're eating alone tonight.

I have found that Lodge cast iron is the heaviest cast iron cookware on the market. For that reason I consider it the best. And the price is a steal! These things will last you your entire life, and just get better and better as time goes by.

And unlike some people, I find taking proper care of my Lodge cast iron cookware is a breeze. No, you can't put them in the dishwasher, but so what?! They'll clean up just fine with a quick rinse and light scrub with a plastic scouring pad or good stiff brush, using very hot water. Dry thoroughly, then a good wipe all over, inside and out with a light coating of vegetable oil or shortening, and there you have it!

I have a variety of Lodge cast iron skillets and I find that the little 8-inch is one of the most versatile sizes for everyday cooking purposes. You cannot go wrong with Lodge-OR their great little 8-inch skillet! I wouldn't buy any other brand of cast iron cookware!

Thank you.

I purchased this item from acehardwareoutket via Amazon. I was looking for an unseasoned skillet. What I received was a Lodge Logic pre-seasoned skillet. The pre-seasoned skillet is excellent (I own several); however, the "original finish" in this description is mis-leading. Furthermore, if I had wanted the pre-seasoned skillet, I would have purchased it directly from Amazon for a lower price and no shipping charge.

I have 3 of these. One was a gift about 30 years ago and then I bought two more when I found them on sale. Great for re-heating, grilling a sandwich, making hashbrowns, you name it. Food doesn't stick like it does in my stainless cookware.

This is a key piece of kitchen hardware. Cast iron is 100% better than stainless steel, it gets hot and stays hot. It is effectively nonstick once it's seasoned and provided you add food at the correct temperature. Do NOT use soap to clean seasoned cast iron, just hot water and a brush. Seasoned cast iron is what Teflon is meant to be.

I find that women tend to scoff at cast iron -my wife took years to come around to admitting that my Lodge cast iron cookware worked better than her steel pans.

Buy Lodge cast iron, season it, it will last more than a lifetime. There is no better cookware!
